Water Therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Bookmark This Page | Send To A Friend
Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA is a disease that
effects the motor neurons of the brain stem and spinal
cord. The motor neurons are responsible for supplying
electrical and chemical messages to muscle cells. An
interruption in this supply can cause atrophy to the
muscles effecting a persons ability to walk or even
breathe.
Water therapy in an Endless Pool can help slow this
muscle atrophy. The buoyancy of the water allows movement
of the arms and legs that may not be otherwise possible.
Water also provides resistance and provides an environment
where an SMA patient can do whole body exercises. Water
therapy also helps maintain joint flexibility and improve
pulmonary function.
The MDA suggests water temperature of 85-90 degrees
for persons with SMA. An important requirement of aquatic
therapy because SMA children have less mass and chill
quickly. The temperature of the water in an Endless
Pool is fully adjustable to meet these requirements.
Perfect for therapy at home.
